Nurse! Nurse! C’mon, get it together. I need you to help me. This woman’s life is in the balance. It’s in my hands, I shout to the nurse for help.
Crimson blood soaks the blue rubber I wear on my hands. I watch closely as my fingers diligently dance with the sharp instruments cutting tissue, removing flesh, replacing flesh. The rubber gloves squeak as I work. Behind me the nurse brings gauze and bandages pure and white to fill the new wounds. Like a field doctor from the Great War I cut and carve. Flesh and blood get in the way.
Nurse! Keep her clean. I can barely see what I’m doing, I say more calmly as the patient has maintained a level heart rate.
The nurse uses a sponge to suck the blood out of my precision cuts. I can now continue my work. The scalpel peels the skin away like silk. Sweat from the intense situation forms on my furrowed forehead. I continue to chisel away and sculpt the canvas before me. She is not much more than an exposed puddle of blood, a vampire’s delight. This nurse really needs to do her job. There’s a life at stake here, and I’m not going to be the one to inform the family that she didn’t survive, I’ve butchered enough people. There’s no reason I shouldn’t be able to do this.
I start to question myself. I question my ego for taking on such an immense job. I question my morals for playing God. I question the oath I took years ago. I question the Lord for doing this to people. Maybe that’s why I’m here, to fix God’s mistakes.
Before me my hands begin to nimbly stitch like a tailor. Unfortunately for me, my beautiful embroideries will remain unseen under the skin. I work fast like an old seamstress. The needle moves in and out of the flesh. I feel like a dressmaker, but really I’m a monster; a hidden monster. I look at the EKG screen, and it jumps and dives as is routine. I step back and look at my creation. She is my new work of art, my Frankenstein’s monster.
Nurse. Bring me the job sheet, and get these gloves off of me.
The woman before me is a horizontal living corpse. I’m disgusted by her beauty. Currently, she looks like the victim of a zombie attack. The nurse arrives with the job sheet.
